School Notes

  • On Our Philosophy and Curriculum:
  • In keeping with the humanisticeducationapproach,AngelesWorkshopSchool believes that thecognitive andtheaffective areindivisible--simply put, a learner'sfeelingsandconcerns, aswell as theirinterests, are wholly tiedintohoweffectively theythinkand learn. This is why we design andadaptourcurriculaaround our students, instead of forcing themintorigid,"top-down"assignments and tests.Within thisexcitingapproach, ourteachersmaintain a dynamiccurriculum richwithavenues forrigorousinquiry, built aroundchallenging contentandskillsetsthatprepare learners for realsuccess inhighereducation, theworkplace, and our ever-changingworld.
  • As a school adapted from manyhumanisticeducationalbeliefs, weare dramatically, refreshinglydifferent. Hereare afewways:
  • No Bells.Time is managed organically, withstudentinputandconsensus. The teacher helpspresenteducationalobjectives, and thestudents collaborate toformagreements andtimelinesregarding theprocess by whichthoseobjectives will bemet.Without a belldictating the division oftheschool day,Workshopstudents canbecome deeply involved withtheirwork andclaimownership of thelearning process, transitioningthroughsubjectsin a moreintellectually andemotionallycomfortablemanner.
  • No Homework. In keeping withthehumanisticvalueofself-evaluation, the Workshop does notassignhomework.Familytimeis respected. A student is trusted tochoosehowtheywillspendtheir evening; we find that many studentsworkbetterontheiracademics after school when they genuinely wanttolearnmoreaboutthose topics, not when they are forced to doso.
  • No Tests.Students learn and perform at their bestwhentheyarenotunder stress. We believe inauthentic, alternativeassessmentsthat arethen used by the studenttoself-assess. Ifstudentschoosetofamiliarize themselveswithtraditionalandstandardized tests aspreparation forfutureinstitutions, teacherssupport them, drawingupon theirbackgroundsas AP and SATPrepteachers.
  • Self-Grading.At set periods, studentsself-assesswiththeguidanceof rubrics, portfolios and critiques, guidedbytheteacher. Thisresults in a more authentic reflectiononthevalueof the student'slearning process. TraditionallettergradesofA,B,C, or Fail are used,if only to givematriculatingstudentstheoption of carrying atranscript with lettergrades onit.
  • City Days. Thursdays we spend "inthefield":working, studying, exploring and interacting with the cityanditsendlesscivic, cultural and natural environs.OnCityDays, theWorkshopreally takesadvantage of its "adoptedcampus"-- ourgreatcity. After just afive minute walk to the ExpoCulverCityStation, weexplore andengage with the full range ofwhatLosAngeles has tooffer. I've been a parent for the last three years at Angeles, my son is a graduating senior this year. He was failing ninth grade during remote school, but really his educational career started falling off the tracks in seventh grade, and what we discovered during lockdown was that he doesn't learn his at his best in a traditional school setting. We found Angeles and we immediately fell in love with it. With its creative Workshop vibe, it reminded me of those magical first days of preschool and what I came to discover was they really took the concept of self-led and self-directed education to where it wanted to go. Here that philosophy was but in a 6-12 setting. Jack went from completely shut down to starting to love learning again. He was merely surviving in the traditional school setting and here he started actually thriving. I thought a college future was completely impossible but now he has all kinds of career goals between going to SMC and then transferring to a four year university and he's already talking about getting internships in his creative field of choice. I'm really going to miss having a child here and I'm already wondering which of my next kids can go here!

This school has been a wonderful alternative to traditional schooling. The small size and tight community create a nurturing and supportive environment for diverse learners. The teachers are very knowledgeable, supportive, and flexible, meeting the kids where they are and moving from there. We are so glad we found this school !!!

We feel so lucky to have found Angeles Workshop School. Loving and understanding teachers and a community that recognizes and honors that everyone learns differently. My only regret is that we didn't send my son there earlier, when we first found it.

My son joined AWS in sixth grade after completing a local public elementary school and is now a seventh grader. He is gifted and on the spectrum, and found the strictures of public school very frustrating. AWS was a revelation for him and our family that turned school from a miserable struggle into a positive enriching experience. The school is a pressure reliever and has some very special features, like a very small class size with tons of personal attention from wonderful teachers, a long group walk every Tuesday, a big field trip every Thursday, and role-playing games every Friday, and there is absolutely no homework.

Angeles Workshop School literally saved my life and the life of my Boys. After coming off a log Motorhome trip, 5 years, with home schooling and hands on learning, we just couldn't place our young men into the system to be indoctrinated. We wanted our boys to learn to think and not just follow. Angeles Workshop School is just that place. Through their learning from roll playing games, real world experience through field trip and so much more. If you are thinking about having your Children in a loving place where they will learn to love learning, this is the place.

An amazing school that recognized my daughter's learning style. The faculty is top notch and very attentive to the students needs.

Like a progressive European school that values creativity and individuality as much as it values textbook learning. Small, but family-like. Owners/operators are a PhD and an ex-AP English teacher. Genuinely inclusive of all backgrounds and tuition is priced right.
