School Notes

  • Boys’ Latin is Maryland’s oldest independent, non-sectarian school for boys. Our ongoing experience shows that BL is a community purposefully focused on the best in education for boys, true excellence. We are a community of 600 students in grades K-12 with an average class size of 14 and student-teacher ratio of 7-1.
  • Over the past 50+ years, BL has grown to 41 acres in Roland Park with state-of-the art classrooms, three libraries, dedicated visual and performing arts centers and outstanding athletic facilities. For more than 170 years, Boys’ Latin has been characterized by True Excellence, embodied in our motto ESSE QUAM VIDERI, “TO BE RATHER THAN TO SEEM.” For each of us, that means pushing beyond what to others seems sufficient for excellence. Instead, we seek to be truly excellent, in ways measured by deeper insights, extra steps, harder decisions and, ultimately, having a greater impact.
  • In our annual parent survey, we see that BL parents value the following:
  • Expertise in Learning for Boys
  • In 1844, a Princeton University professor founded BL using his, then, new theory that students flourish when their unique interests and talents are taken into account. Guided by more than 170 years of experience, modern cognitive research and a School-wide commitment to excellence, our approach is to continually improve our educational experience for the boys. Our faculty has an average of 14 years teaching experience, and more than 50% hold advanced degrees.
  • Research shows that boys respond best to experiential, hands-on learning that appeals to the different senses, involving action and movement. BL understands that boys need to knowwhysomething is important and what significance it has for them. Boys are motivated by the belief that their efforts will produce a positive, tangible outcome, and it is this intrinsic motivation that makes the difference. Our teachers’ hands-on approach with real-world applications makes learning come to life.
  • We are pleased to have had internationally recognized author and expert in male development Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D. as BL’s resident fellow for two years. Dr. Thompson worked directly with our community and was on campus periodically to speak to parents, faculty, staff and coaches and to advise students.
  • Distinctive talents, boundless possibilities
  • BL graduates go on to attend some of the nation’s top colleges and universities such as Yale, Princeton and Johns Hopkins; specialty schools such as Berklee College of Music or Savannah College of Art and Design; or the service academies including the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy and King’s Point: the Merchant Marine Academy. One student may go on to pursue engineering developed out of his experience in our world-class robotics team, and another may become a successful entrepreneur based on the leadership skills he learned starting here at BL. Our alumni have gone on to be Pulitzer Prize winners and mathematicians, Rhodes Scholars and firefighters, philanthropists and cartoonists and more.
  • Students set challenging goals with rigorous college-preparatory course work including 39 honors and 12 AP courses plus two post-AP (college-level) math courses. There are a wide array of arts and activities – jazz ensembles, robotics teams, theater, Model UN, community service projects and conference-championship-level athletic teams in a dozen sports. We challenge each boy to discover his interests and become HIS best here and in life beyond our campus. We celebrate the opportunity to make a difference in the life of each student.
  • Brothers for Life
  • With 600 students, BL is committed to being a small school. The experience here is intentionally personal. Classes have about ten students, so our boys know everyone in the class.Students enjoy enduring personal relationships with their schoolmates and BL faculty, and they return for events and stay connected over time. This camaraderie or brotherhood does not occur by accident but is fostered at BL through our character education program, leadership and performance opportunities, School traditions and an intentional series of developmentally appropriate shared experiences. When asked to describe BL, our top comment in annual parent surveys is the caring/friendly community feeling here. One parent said “BL is like an extension of your family…very supportive, caring and out for the same goal which is to give your son the most incredible experience possible.”
  • Genuine Joy of Teaching, Genuine Joy of Learning
  • Our teachers love what they do, which is evident in their involvement beyond the classroom. Mr. LaFreniere is a published poet who created a Poetry Slam Contest where 65 boys not only voluntarily participated, but brought outstanding creations and overwhelming enthusiasm to a week night gathering. Miss Molling uses her talent in art to teach juveniles convicted as adults how to picture a new world, and her example and stories inspire our boys. Our talented faculty members are teachers, advisors, mentors, coaches and often life-long friends. When asked to describe BL, our top comment in annual parent surveys is the caring/friendly community feeling here. One parent said “BL is like an extension of your family…very supportive, caring and out for the same goal which is to give your son the most incredible experience possible.”
  • Authentic Men of Character
  • Our motto – Esse quam videri, “to be rather than to seem,” sets a standard of authenticity and humility to which all members of our community aspire. Headmaster Christopher J. Post summed it up well: “At BL because we are small, in many ways like a family, the level of care we can afford each boy is 2nd to none. Our boys come to know themselves, as we encourage each of them to look themselves in the eye as they make choices about the kinds of people they want to become. This kind of focus on the individual, that each boy’s accomplishments are truly celebrated, is what ultimately enables our boys to learn how to better carry themselves with core values of integrity, courage and compassion as they develop from good boys into great men.”
