Creating An Intro To A Literary Essay: Things To Remember

A literary essay is one where you write a paper analysing a piece of literature. There are some things that you need to remember when you are writing this paper. The introduction for this paper is very important because it will present your audience with any information that it may need to ensure that they will be able to understand the rest of the paper without having read the piece of literature. It may be a good idea to write the introduction last because you need to make sure that all of the information that is needed to understand the piece is in there.

  • Begin by reading the piece of literature that you will be writing your paper on. You will want to reread it if you haven’t read it in a while so that you can start to analyse it. It will be very important to get an idea of what you are looking for and then read the piece so that you know what to take your notes on.
  • The introduction will need to set the stage for the rest of the paper. You will need to decide what background information is important. You will want to present information about the author, the time period, and the piece with this type of paper. Your analysis will have a lot to do with these factors so it is important to include information regarding the factors that may have lead the writer to write about the topic.
  • Include definitions that are topic specific and may be needed to understand the topic. It is very important to make sure that you include any definitions that the reader needs to know to understand the rest of the piece. This would only be needed with some of the pieces and not with just any piece. Regular words that the reader should know do not have to be included.
  • Include a main point or focus that you will prove through your paper. You will need to present a thesis statement at the end of your introduction. It will explain what your paper is about and what you are writing about with the piece. It can be the overall opinion that you have about the piece and the rest of the paper will work to prove it. When you are dealing with the thesis statement, you will need to try not to deviate from this idea.
